I have been asked when is the right time, or when are you obligated, to tell a new boyfriend/girlfriend that you are carrying lots of credit card debt?

Your financial affairs are none of anyone’s business unless and until you become certain that this boyfriend or girlfriend is a person with whom you are seriously contemplating becoming a committed couple.

Dating is a time to meet people and explore whether or not they are a good match for you on many different levels.  MOST of the people you date will NOT be a match and you’ll move on and never see them again. This is the nature of dating and is completely normal.

Your financial affairs are a very private matter and should not be disclosed to just anyone. That said, if you are dating and have lots of credit card debt, you are NOT really ready to commit. Lots of financial debt makes you a poor choice for a long-term committed partnership. So get to work now to clean up your financial affairs so you can report honestly that this is an issue that is being addressed by you.

Remember, only YOU can make it happen!
